February was named after the Latin term februum, which means purification. The number of days in the month of February has ranged from 23 to 27 until the institution of the Julian calendar in 45 BC. Under the Julian system, leap years occurred at four year intervals and gained a 29th day in the leap year. This is also when it took it's permanent place as being the second month of the year. Historical names for February include the Anglo-Saxon terms Solmonath (mud month) and Kale-monath (named for cabbage) as well as Charlemagne's designation Hornung.
